I think people from the start are just people. That being said "we" are hugely influenced by our culture. Women are treated extremely differently from one group to another for instance. When religion comes into it and its written down STRAIGHT FROM GOD "HIMSELF" well then its "THE LAW" !! For Gods sake ! And then people start climbing up their pedestals and LORDING it over everyone else. So that was my mini trash fest.
I think it all boils down to power. And everything returns to haunt the group that oppresses the original group. Look at the "reparations" themes and scenes. A group from Europe can oppress another group from Africa hundreds of years ago and it will eventually come back to bite one's ass. And of course everyone had slaves (pretty well) form the Chinese, to the Africans to the Americans, to the Vikings and on it goes. So there's trickery in the history books through records and omissions.
And there's a mental component as well. Its actually kind of interesting !
That paranoia of being oppressed along with religious books stating your group is the chosen group and some other group is "unclean" or evil etc starts the ball rolling. I personally don't have a religion, by that I mean an organize one. However I am highly interested in the origins of the Universe and feel there is some intelligence guiding it and in its creation.

Any criticism of it can draw in intense interest and I like to babble on about my little topics without that interest.
