Another great short video from the Subaru Telescope All Sky Camera.
This is the same telescope that picked up the green vertical rays last year.
The fact that they put a question mark at the end of this is interesting. So what is it?

Failed Peregrine Lander for Moon? This view was recorded by Subaru Telescope's All-sky camera which is located on the Maunakea summit. A dot of light appeared over the western horizon at around 22:40, Jan 7, 2024 (Hawai'i Time). 82 min earlier, ULA's new Vulcan Centaur rocket onboard Peregrine Lunar Lander was launched from Florida. It might be the Peregrine Lander that failed to move to the transfer orbit. Any more information is welcome.

ELVES and Sprites were seen over Maunakea Observatories on the nights of Aug 29 & 30, 2024 (UT). They are one of the Transient Luminous Events (TLE), the upper-atmospheric lightning, and very rarely seen in Hawaii.
They appeared by the powerful thunderclouds associated with a Tropical system Gilma.

マウナケア上空の永続痕 / A long Persistent Train over Maunakea 2024-09-06
On September 6, 2024 (Hawaii time), a large fireball occurred just before dawn at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, where the Subaru Telescope is located. The persistent train left by the fireball was captured by the Subaru Telescope's all-sky camera.
Although the fireball itself was obscured by the telescope dome, it was bright enough to illuminate the surrounding landscape.
The illuminated landscape was captured by the Subaru-Asahi Starry Sky Camera (credit: NAOJ & Asahi Shimbun), while the persistent train was documented by the Subaru All-Sky Camera (credit: NAOJ).

Although this spiral light isnt recent I wanted to add it to the thread - its very interesting!!

A "Mysterious" Flying Spiral was seen over Maunakea. 2023-01-18 UT. Really unusual view! Any idea about what it is?
Our keen viewers discovered this rare event. According to them, it seems it is related to the satellite orbital deployment operation. A new satellite was launched earlier this day by Space X.
The video was from our "Subaru-Asahi STAR Camera" which is jointly operated by NAOJ (Subaru Telescope) and Asahi Shimbun (Japanese newspaper company).

This is the green laser beams which were recorded from the telescope in January 23 - this still has never had a plausible scientific explanation. It was before the Maui fires, but it came back into the spotlight afterwards.

Last night (early morning 2023-1-28 HST) was cloudy on Maunakea. But our Subaru-Asahi Star Camera captured quite an interesting view -- green laser lights coming from the sky!
It was only a second or less -- but our keen viewers did not miss the event!
That was so a mysterious view, then later the viewers got a conclusion from the information on the net -- it could be a remote-sensing laser (altimeter called ATLAS) from ICESat-2/43613 (BUT see below: different conclusion emerged!)! What great people! We really appreciate their great contribution to catching such a rare view!

According to Dr. Martino, Anthony J., a NASA scientist working on ICESat-2 ATLAS, it is not by their instrument but by others. His colleagues, Dr. Alvaro Ivanoff et al., did a simulation of the trajectory of satellites that have a similar instrument and found a most likely candidate as the ACDL instrument by the Chinese Daqi-1/AEMS satellite. We really appreciate their efforts in the identification of the light. We are sorry about our confusion related to this event and its potential impact on the ICESat-2 team.

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, Near the Final View at Eastern Sky, Maunakea, Hawai'i, Morning 2024-10-02
The great view of the Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS from the dome of Subaru Telescope in the morning of 2024-10-02 (HST). After passing perihelion, its tail has grown amazingly long and prominent. It will gradually go closer to the sun in several days and will be away from the eastern sky soon.

After 10th October it will reappear in the western sky hopefully with a gorgeous tail. We will chase the comet with an additional special live camera next week. Please check it out.

COMET WATCHING...

DESCRIPTION: The great view of the Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS from the dome of Subaru Telescope in the morning of 2024-10-05 (HST). Its head part is already not visible in the morning light with our camera. But the tail is amazingly long, estimated to be over 30 deg in the sky.
On Oct 8 it will be closest to the sun (in appearance!! perihelion was already passed), then move to the western sky afterward. But its tail is so long that we may continuously see a part of it in the morning sky. Let's see.

We will chase the comet with an additional special live camera next week. Please check it out.

A great fireball over Maunakea 2022-10-25 as viewed from Subaru Telescope
We had another and even more extreme fireball which shone the whole Maunakea Observatories in a moment.
The event happened at midnight on 25 Oct 2022 (Hawaii Time). Subaru-Asahi Star Camera captured the footage.

Currently the Taurid Meteor Showers are active, and this fireball may belong to the shower. Indeed, we already had several fireball-class meteors during the last week. You still have the chance to witness the fireballs! Let's look up at the sky!

A Large Fireball Appeared over Maunakea, 2024-11-09 (HST)
A very bright fireball appeared over Maunakea in the morning sky of 9 Nov, 2024, right at the center of the Subaru-Asahi Star Camera view. It left a clear persistent train. Its move is interesting.
